The eighth and final episode of Reflector features two Speculative Energy Futures projects – Banners and Earth Fortunes. “What’s Up Ahead” refers to both the Banners project’s invocation of billboards and other mechanisms for getting “the word out” in public, and to Earth Fortunes’ engaging and often surprising ways of thinking about the future regarding energy transition – which seems a fitting way to wrap up the Reflector Podcast Series. Banners is a project in a box included in the FluxKit, that asks participants to imagine installing signage in favour of energy transition in their local community. Earth Fortunes melds scientific ways of modeling what the future holds regarding climate change and energy transition with a fortune-teller vibe, made possible through the use of augmented reality and virtual reality, as well as a beautifully crafted set of fortune telling cards. Joining todays discussion are four members of the Speculative Energy Futures team, film professor Caitlin Fisher (York University), Evan Davies (University of Alberta), Ruth Beer (Emily Carr University), artist Sean Caulfield (University of Alberta), with input from Brooklyn designer and architect Thomas Mahon. As always, use the project links above to our interactive resources to enjoy a visual and auditory encounter with the FluxKit as you listen.
