DESCRIPTION:International Solidarity With Wet’suwet’en \n#wetsuwetenstrong #notrespass #thetimeisnow \nTUESDAY JANUARY 8\, 2019 \nOn January 4\, members of the RCMP’s Aboriginal Police Liaison met with the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and indicated that specially trained tactical forces will be deployed to forcibly remove Wet’suwet’en people from sovereign Wet’suwet’en territory. \nThe RCMP’s ultimatum\, to allow TransCanada access to unceded Wet’suwet’en territory or face police invasion\, is an act of war. Despite the lip service given to “Truth and Reconciliation”\, Canada is now attempting to do what it has always done – criminalize and use violence against indigenous people so that their unceded homelands can be exploited for profit. \nThe RCMP were advised that there are children\, elders\, and families visiting and present at the Gidimt’en Access Point\, to which they did not respond. \nArticle 10 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples clearly states “Indigenous peoples shall not be forcibly removed from their land or territories.” Any removal of Wet’suwet’en peoples by the RCMP\, or any other authoritarian forces\, will directly violate UNDRIP and the Trudeau government’s promise to implement UNDRIP. \nWe are now preparing for a protracted struggle. Under ‘Anuc niwh’it’en (Wet’suwet’en law) all five clans of the Wet’suwet’en have unanimously opposed all pipeline proposals. TransCanada lawyers have argued that the Unist’ot’en are essentially a rogue group without a rightful claim to Aboriginal title. The Gidimt’en intervention shows that the Unist’ot’en Camp are not alone\, and that the hereditary chiefs of all clans are prepared to uphold Wet’suwet’en law in refusing Coastal GasLink access. \nCanada knows that its own actions are illegal. The Wet’suwet’en fought for many years in the Delgamuukw-Gisday’wa court case to have their sovereignty recognized and affirmed by Canadian law. In 1997\, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the Wet’suwet’en people\, as represented by their hereditary leaders\, had not given up rights and title to 22\,000km2 of Northern British Columbia. Knowing that further litigation would be prohibitively expensive to Indigenous plaintiffs (and that pipeline construction could be completed before any significant legal issues could be further resolved) TransCanada and the provincial and federal governments are openly violating this landmark ruling. \nThe 22\,000 sq km of Wet’suwet’en Territory is divided into five clans and 13 house groups. Each clan/house group manages the use of their own territory. Unist’ot’en homestead sits on Gilsteyu Dark House Territory and manager of this territory is house group better known as Unist’ot’en. From the Widzin Kwa bridge at 66 km passing the bridge going down to 44 KM it becomes Gitdumt’en Territory. DESCRIPTION:Join Migrante Alberta and Climate Justice Edmonton for an evening of food\, arts and culture to mark International Human Rights Day and International Migrants’ Day. \n“The Right to Exist” will bring together a wide range of activists\, organizers\, and artists from across Treaty 6 territory to share food\, stories\, dances\, visual art\, and spoken word and stand-up performances on the intersections of migrant and climate justice. \nIn an era of global capitalism\, the degradation of peoples’ human rights and the destruction of the environment go hand-in-hand\, and Canada is complicit in both. \nBoth around the world and here at home\, Canadian mining corporations are dispossessing Indigenous peoples of their lands and livelihoods\, and fuelling the climate crisis in the name of corporate profit. \nEvery year\, from Mexico to the Philippines\, to Syria and the Marshall Islands\, millions of migrants are being forced abroad by global capitalism— whether from the natural disasters it has magnified or the economic opportunities it has destroyed. \nBut instead of extending an open hand to those in need\, Canada has adopted an immigration policy of “use\, abuse and deport\,” which was intensified under former Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and has been maintained under Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government. SUMMARY:Sensing the Anthropocene: Aesthetic Attunement in an Age of Urgency
DESCRIPTION:Speculative Energy Futures Co-Investigator Natalie Loveless is the 2018-2019 Visiting Scholar for the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture in Montreal\, Quebec. She is presenting two talks in the series\, Sensing the Anthropocene.  The second talk is titled “Aesthetic Attunement in an Age of Urgency.” \nThis talk will describe a new research project on art and ecology with the working title of Sensing the Anthropocene. Instead of outputs that draw on textual and site research but that are solely artistic in form\, or ones that draw on artistic practice but result in only a published paper\, Sensing the Anthropocene will work responsively across practice-theory lines with academic\, artistic\, and curatorial outputs. Grounded in a distinction between art on ecology and art that is formed ecologically\, the project investigates four “dematerialized” artistic methods — durational performance; deep listening; soundwalking; and Fluxus instruction scores. In addition to describing these practices in terms of both history and form\, this talk makes a claim for their importance as practices of aesthetic micro-political attunement\, generating affective resilience in the face of the denialism or\ndespair that too often accompanies a topic of such scope as we are facing with Anthropogenic climate change today.

Discussions of just transitions are at different stages of development. They come with the usual bundle of issues\, problems\, controversies and setbacks. But they also come with potential and promise. In a bleak intellectual context\, where the converging forces of climate destabilization and authoritarian populism would seem to be shrinking the ecopolitical imaginary to the propositions that we must either prepare for the worst or embrace a technocratic ecomodernist project to decarbonize the status quo\, discussions circulating around just transitions are marked by a refreshing level of pragmatic concreteness and even a degree of hope.The Rhode Island School of Design\, The RISD Auditorium 7 Canal Walk\, Providence River Greenway\, Providence\, RIThe Rhode Island School of Design\, The RISD Auditorium 7 Canal Walk\, Providence River Greenway\, Providence\, RI \nBuilding on two previous meetings held at Brown and Northeastern by the Just Transitions Research Network in 2016 and 2017\, this symposium will bring together a range of scholars and activists to map some of the different ways in which the search for just and rapid post carbon transitions now animates all manner of interventions–on the part of labor and climate justice activists\, designers\, architects\, academics and artists–and is opening up intersectional spaces across movements fighting for racial and gender justice. We will explore the political\, ideological\, aesthetic\, cultural and socio-technological barriers that stand in the way of just transitions in both the Global North and Global South. We will consider who is visible and who is rendered invisible in different kinds of transition discourses. This symposium will explore the potential material\, political and ecological impacts of a renewables roll-out. She is presenting two talks in the series\, Sensing the Anthropocene.  The first is titled “Art\, Ecology\, and the Politics of Form.” \nThis talk asks what artistic approaches and sensibilities can offer to debate surrounding Anthropogenic climate change\, attending to the difference between art on ecology and art that is formed ecologically. As well as giving theoretical and art historical background for this distinction\, Loveless speculates on how the politics of form (what a form does in the world) intersects with ecological ethics when the use of fossil fuel resources (as\, in Olafur Eliasson’s 2015 Ice Watch\, those needed to ship\n300 pound blocks of glacier ice to the center of Paris) are central to the production of artworks addressing ecology\, global warming\, and climate debt. Offering nuanced reflection on such works\, this talk highlights the importance of a multi-sensorial and multi-species understanding of ecological ethics that takes the question of aesthetic form seriously in the context of art on and in the Anthropocene.

SUMMARY:Petrocultures 2018 Conference: Transition
DESCRIPTION:Petrocultures is an international\, multi-disciplinary conference on oil cultures and energy humanities\, motivated by the core notion that the humanities and social sciences have significant input to add to both knowledge of oil and energy\, and the irrevocable process of transformation. \nThe international field has grown rapidly since the inaugural Petrocultures conference in Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada in 2012\, producing scholarly and creative work across numerous platforms\, disciplines\, genres\, and territories. While much work has been done to highlight the social and cultural significance of fossil fuels\, the ecological unfeasibility of high-carbon life urgently compels us to think\, imagine\, and realize a world ‘after oil’. The organizing theme of Petrocultures 2018 is Transition\, which may be culturally interpreted in a variety of ways. The conference will provide an important forum for examining and extending existent framings and sitings of oil and petroculture\, while also striving to consider the social\, cultural\, and aesthetic life of alternative forms of energy\, such as wind\, solar\, and hydro power.\n​\nThis is the first Petrocultures conference to be held outside North America. Scotland is an excellent location from which to contemplate the petrocultural and beyond. The country’s relationship with its offshore oil industry offers a rich backdrop for examining all the contradictions and controversies\, opportunities and challenges oil has presented to modern petroculture and the world-ecological condition it has fostered. As a relatively late site of oil and gas extraction\, Scotland has always been acutely perceptive of the inevitable ‘ends’ of oil. Much recent focus has been on the reality of decommissioning its petro-infrastructure\, and the social consequences of this event. Attempts to become a leading site of renewable energy have been accompanied by bold climate policy initiatives. Illuminating parallels can be drawn\, therefore\, between Scotland’s experience and that of other key oil-sites—from Ireland\, Canada and Norway to the Netherlands and the City of London—but also with emergent low-carbon initiatives seeking to install a culture of transition\, across the continent and the globe. SUMMARY:Petrocultures Lecture with Rhys Williams
DESCRIPTION:“Generic Energetic: Contemporary Popular Genres as Tools for Transition.”\nThinking with the young genre of solarpunk\, this talk proposes a way to answer two large questions. Firstly\, how do the structures of popular contemporary genres – their traditions\, the narrative and symbolic strategies that they make available\, their meaning-making affordances – how do these shape our efforts to imagine alternative energy futures? And secondly\, how is the real-world crisis – the urgent need for transition – transforming these popular genres? \nBeginning with an argument for a historical and situated methodology that builds from John Rieder’s recent intervention into genre studies\, the talk considers the real-world communities of practice engaged with solarpunk\, and outlines the early process of accretion that gives rise to the genre. It then identifies and takes a deep dive into two elements of the generic tradition that shape and are shaped by solarpunk: Light\, and Magic\, and how these elements inform the kinds of alternative energy futures imagined within the genre. This work stands as a first effort in a larger project to understand the intersection of contemporary popular genres – SF\, Fantasy\, Utopia\, weird\, eerie\, what might be loosely termed the fantastical genres – as tools for meaning-making\, on the one hand\, and the urgent need for transition to a renewable future\, on the other. \nRhys Williams is a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Research Fellow at Glasgow University. His research is focused on questions of genre\, energy\, environment\, and pedagogy\, in particular using the tools of contemporary genre to make meaningful and desirable alternative futures. He has published in Science Fiction Studies and Paradoxa\, and is the editor of Paradoxa 26: SF Now.

DESCRIPTION:Hot off the press from MIT this month.\nPlease join us for the launch of this book on the Alberta Oil Sands\, by authors Matt Hern and Am Johal\, illustrated by the internationally recognized cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco. \nAuthor Matt Hern will be at the University of Alberta to give a presentation on this recently released book. Following that\, four respondents will give short provocations on their reactions to the book. We will then open up the floor\, for a larger conversation with the audience. Everyone is welcome. \nSome coffee and snacks will be available. \n  \nDr. Matt Hern:\nMatt Hern is a community organizer from East Vancouver\, BC ( səlil’wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory. He is the co-director of Stay Solid Industries\, teaches at several universities and lectures widely. He is the author of many books\, including What a City is For: Remaking the Politics of Displacement (MIT\, 2016) and Global Warming and the Sweetness of Life (MIT\, 2018). \nRespondents:\nDr. Angele Alook is proud member of Bigstone Cree Nation\, an Indigenous labour researcher for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)\, Staff Advisor on the Environmental Committee for AUPE\, and steering-committee member for the Indigenous Labour History Project for ALHI (Alberta Labour History Institute). Dr. Alook also brings Indigenous and feminist perspectives and research methods to several Canada Tri-Council-funded initiatives concerned with climate and energy justice\, including the Corporate Mapping Project and Just Powers. \nAriel Kroon is a PhD candidate at the University of Alberta\, studying Canadian post-apocalyptic science fiction published between 1948 and 1989. She analyzes the imagination of crisis and disaster from an ecological standpoint and is in the process of evaluating these texts as the grounds of an alternate imaginary\, one inflected by authors’ struggles with gendered identity\, colonial rule\, environmental consciousness\, cultural continuance\, and the ever-present threat of a nuclear apocalypse despite not belonging to a major world power. She holds a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship and has published both scholarly work and poetry. \nDr. Rhys Williams is a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Research Fellow at Glasgow University. Loveless is a conceptual artist\, curator\, and assistant professor of contemporary art history and theory in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta\, where she also directs the Research-Creation and Social Justice CoLABoratory. She is co-lead of Speculative Energy Futures\, a multi-year project that is part of the Just Powers initiative led by Dr. Sheena Wilson and funded by the Future Energy Systems CFREF\, the Kule Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) and a SSHRC Insight grant. Her book\, How to Make Art at the End of the World: A Manifesto for Research-Creation\, is forthcoming with Duke University Press. \nDr. Sourayan Mookerjea is director of the Intermedia Research Studio in the Department of Sociology (University of Alberta)\, where he specializes in decolonizing social theory\, critical globalization studies\, and intermedia research. His current projects include SSHRC funded research on The Commons and the Convergence of Crises\, Toxic Media Ecologies: Critical Responses to the Cultural Politics of Planetary Crises and is co-director of Feminist Energy Futures and iDoc@Just Powers. He is a founding member of RePublicU\, a critical university studies project\, and of the Arts and the Research-Creation and Social Justice CoLABoratory. \nDr. Sheena Wilson is Associate Professor at the University of Alberta\, co-director of the international Petrocultures Research Group\, and research-lead on Just Powers\, an interdisciplinary and community-engaged initiative focused on climate justice organized around socially just energy transition for all. Funded by a Tri-Council SSHRC grant and the Future Energy Systems’ Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF)\, the research initiatives ongoing under Just Powers include\, amongst others\, Feminist Energy Futures: Power Shift and Environmental Social Justice; 2) Speculative Energy Futures 3) iDoc and 4) Bigstone Cree: A Vision for the Future. DESCRIPTION:​Just Powers Annual Team Meeting: March 8-9\, 2018 \nFollowing the official launch of the Just Powers initiative on March 6th\, 2018 on the Change for Climate Stage at the IPCC Cities and Climate Change Conference\, the entire Just Powers team will come together from across Canada for the first time. This meeting will include co-applicants and collaborators engaged in various aspects of projects occurring under Just Powers\, including Feminist Energy Futures: Power Shift and Environmental Social Justice\, iDoc\, Speculative Energy Futures\, and more. \nSpeculative Energy Futures First Annual Team Meeting: March 8-11\, 2018 \nThis March 2018 meeting also marks the first annual gathering for Speculative Energy Futures\, which brings together the artists\, activists\, policy makers\, and academics. This team will work together over the next several years on an aesthetic and interdisciplinary response to the social and cultural impacts of energy transition. Together\, participants will produce a large-scale\, evidence-based exhibition as well as a series of publications\, bringing attention to the importance of arts and humanities perspectives\, informed by the latest cutting edge research coming out of Just Powers\, the IPCC\, and Future Energy Systems. Speculative Energy Futures will officially launch on March 1st\, 2018 (5:30-7:00)\, when Natalie Loveless and Sheena Wilson speak with other brilliant climate justice scholars and artists at the Alberta Gallery of Art on the evening panel The Power of Art to Influence Social Change.

SUMMARY:iDoc workshop: speculating on future energy systems
DESCRIPTION:The iDoc workshop at IPCC will showcase the knowledge of scientists\, cities\, activists\, policymakers\, and citizens by probing possible energy systems futures and technologies envisioned by Future Energy Systems (FES) teams. The intermedia documentary process began just six months ago and is already generating multidisciplinary discussion. iDoc research mobilizes an updated social science methodology known as the Fogo Process\, first used by the National Film Board.
