SUMMARY:Canada's Energy Future: The Path to Transition - Edmonton
DESCRIPTION:There is broad recognition among Albertans and Canadians about the need to transition away from using fossil fuels as our primary source of energy. What is less clear is what exactly we are transitioning to\, and what that transition will mean for our daily lives\, our communities\, and our economies. Without answers to those questions\, it is impossible to address issues such as what government policies will be required to achieve the transition\, how we prepare our economy for transition\, and how we ensure that the transition will treat workers and communities fairly. \nJoin us for a presentation by renowned earth scientist David Hughes as he discusses our current energy mix in Canada\, the deployability of renewable energy sources\, and what will be required in order for us to achieve the degree and scope of transition that is required by the climate crisis. \n:: About David Hughes :: \nDavid Hughes is an earth scientist who has studied the energy resources of Canada and the US for more than four decades\, including 32 years with the Geological Survey of Canada as a scientist and research manager\, where he headed unconventional gas and coal research. His research focus has been on unconventional fuels\, primarily shale gas and tight oil\, but also coal\, coalbed methane and other unconventional sources\, including oil sands\, coal gasification and gas hydrates. Much of his recent work has focused on long-term energy security in light of the climate imperative and the modeling conducted by the IPCC and others. He is the author of Canada’s Energy Outlook: Current Realities and Implications for a Carbon-constrained Future\, and recently represented the “No” side in a dialogue with Martha Hall Findlay on the question of whether pipelines are in the public interest published by Alberta Views magazine. Hughes is currently President of Global Sustainability Research Inc\, a consultancy dedicated to research on energy and sustainability issues.

DESCRIPTION:We face a future full of disruption. To keep global warming below 2°C\, countries must adopt a simple rule: cut emissions in half every decade to 2050. Solutions may be market ready and economically attractive\, but it will require economic transformation at an unprecedented speed and scale. \nMeanwhile\, Silicon Valley’s digital revolution is re-wiring the way we work\, shop\, live and socialize. Tech giants have had a profound influence on democracy and the modern economy\, and the promise of artificial intelligence\, robotics\, and the internet of things will only bring more disruption. \nCan the massive transformations of the digital revolution help drive us toward a climate-safe world? This talk explores the priorities for science\, technology and policy to drive forward the integrated approach that is needed to tackle this challenge. Amy Luers and Future Earth are showing leaders\, scientists and business that they must collaborate to put us on the road to a thriving\, sustainable future. \nSPEAKER BIO \nAmy Luers comes to Future Earth from the Skoll Global Threats Fund (SGTF) where she was Director of Climate. Previously\, she was the Assistant Director for Climate Resilience and Information at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Dr. Luers spent a number of years at Google as the Senior Environment Program Manager. Prior to Google she led the climate program at the Union of Concerned Sciences California office. Luers started her career in Latin America as co-founder and the first executive director of Agua Para La Vida (Water for Life)\, working with rural communities to enhance access to potable water. \nShe has published in both academic and the popular media on issues related to vulnerability to global environmental change\, data\, sustainability\, climate policy\, and science communication. A respected scientist and data innovator\, Luers has been recognised as a PopTech fellow\, a Switzer Environmental Fellow\, Heinz Environmental Scholar\, and has advised the California state government\, the White House\, and the United Nations. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has served on committees of the National Academies of Sciences. Luers holds a Ph.D. in environmental science and an M.A. in international policy studies\, from Stanford University; a B.S. and M.S. in environmental systems engineering from Humboldt State University; and a B.A. in philosophy from Middlebury College. \n

SUMMARY:Apply to the Climate Leadership Program!
DESCRIPTION:“Climate change is the overarching crisis of our time\, providing both challenges and opportunities for us to tackle. The Climate Leadership Program (CLP) will build the capacity of participants to take leadership and initiate climate action in their personal lives and organizations in Alberta. \nWe are looking for 20 people who are on leadership pathways in organizations that do not necessarily have climate change as their core focus. For example\, past program participants have had continuing roles in: education\, health care\, the private sector\, Indigenous communities\, government\, the labour movement\, the energy sector\, cooperatives\, not-for-profits that focus on newcomers\, and so on. The retreat based program will run from March to July\, 2019. \nOver five weekends in Kananaskis\, Calgary\, Red Deer and Edmonton the CLP participants will work with and learn from active Albertan climate leaders. One weekend will centre on land based learning\, which will be without readily accessible shelter\, and subject to changing weather and environmental conditions. Participants will learn about efforts to tackle climate change already taking place in Alberta\, explore what other relevant jurisdictions are doing on this front\, develop collaboration and action planning skills\, and explore how they can use their professional and personal resources to incorporate climate as a lens to leverage positive solutions and collaboration to address climate change. At the conclusion of the program\, participants will have developed a strategic plan for how their organization/sector can both support climate action by others and how they can bring a climate lens into their work to help advance action on climate change in Alberta. If you are someone whose goal is to recognize and take opportunities for climate action where possible\, then this program may be for you! \nThe CLP is for people 25 and older\, who have been active in their organization/sector for at least two years and who intend to continue to be involved there over the next 3-5 years. We strongly support the participation of people who identify as members of equity seeking communities\, that include low income\, queer\, indigenous\, newcomer disabled\, people of colour\, faith groups and many others. The land based learning weekend has been designed to be accessible to the mobility and comfort needs of all participants. Please mention any concerns about the land based learning\, or any other parts of the program that will affect your participation when applying. There is a sliding scale fee\, $1000 (professional development)\, $400 (employed)\, $200 (lower income) and fully funded scholarships\, as appropriate. Arrangements for childcare are available to support participants’ individual situations. \nWe will be accepting applications as we receive them. DESCRIPTION:International Solidarity With Wet’suwet’en \n#wetsuwetenstrong #notrespass #thetimeisnow \nTUESDAY JANUARY 8\, 2019 \nOn January 4\, members of the RCMP’s Aboriginal Police Liaison met with the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and indicated that specially trained tactical forces will be deployed to forcibly remove Wet’suwet’en people from sovereign Wet’suwet’en territory. \nThe RCMP’s ultimatum\, to allow TransCanada access to unceded Wet’suwet’en territory or face police invasion\, is an act of war. Despite the lip service given to “Truth and Reconciliation”\, Canada is now attempting to do what it has always done – criminalize and use violence against indigenous people so that their unceded homelands can be exploited for profit. \nThe RCMP were advised that there are children\, elders\, and families visiting and present at the Gidimt’en Access Point\, to which they did not respond. \nArticle 10 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples clearly states “Indigenous peoples shall not be forcibly removed from their land or territories.” Any removal of Wet’suwet’en peoples by the RCMP\, or any other authoritarian forces\, will directly violate UNDRIP and the Trudeau government’s promise to implement UNDRIP. \nWe are now preparing for a protracted struggle. The Gidimt’en intervention shows that the Unist’ot’en Camp are not alone\, and that the hereditary chiefs of all clans are prepared to uphold Wet’suwet’en law in refusing Coastal GasLink access. \nCanada knows that its own actions are illegal. The Wet’suwet’en fought for many years in the Delgamuukw-Gisday’wa court case to have their sovereignty recognized and affirmed by Canadian law. In 1997\, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the Wet’suwet’en people\, as represented by their hereditary leaders\, had not given up rights and title to 22\,000km2 of Northern British Columbia. Knowing that further litigation would be prohibitively expensive to Indigenous plaintiffs (and that pipeline construction could be completed before any significant legal issues could be further resolved) TransCanada and the provincial and federal governments are openly violating this landmark ruling. \nThe 22\,000 sq km of Wet’suwet’en Territory is divided into five clans and 13 house groups. Each clan/house group manages the use of their own territory. Unist’ot’en homestead sits on Gilsteyu Dark House Territory and manager of this territory is house group better known as Unist’ot’en. From the Widzin Kwa bridge at 66 km passing the bridge going down to 44 KM it becomes Gitdumt’en Territory. DESCRIPTION:Speculative Energy Futures Co-Investigator Natalie Loveless is the 2018-2019 Visiting Scholar for the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture in Montreal\, Quebec. She is presenting two talks in the series\, Sensing the Anthropocene.  The second talk is titled “Aesthetic Attunement in an Age of Urgency.” \nThis talk will describe a new research project on art and ecology with the working title of Sensing the Anthropocene. Instead of outputs that draw on textual and site research but that are solely artistic in form\, or ones that draw on artistic practice but result in only a published paper\, Sensing the Anthropocene will work responsively across practice-theory lines with academic\, artistic\, and curatorial outputs. Grounded in a distinction between art on ecology and art that is formed ecologically\, the project investigates four “dematerialized” artistic methods — durational performance; deep listening; soundwalking; and Fluxus instruction scores. In addition to describing these practices in terms of both history and form\, this talk makes a claim for their importance as practices of aesthetic micro-political attunement\, generating affective resilience in the face of the denialism or\ndespair that too often accompanies a topic of such scope as we are facing with Anthropogenic climate change today.

She is presenting two talks in the series\, Sensing the Anthropocene.  The first is titled “Art\, Ecology\, and the Politics of Form.” \nThis talk asks what artistic approaches and sensibilities can offer to debate surrounding Anthropogenic climate change\, attending to the difference between art on ecology and art that is formed ecologically. As well as giving theoretical and art historical background for this distinction\, Loveless speculates on how the politics of form (what a form does in the world) intersects with ecological ethics when the use of fossil fuel resources (as\, in Olafur Eliasson’s 2015 Ice Watch\, those needed to ship\n300 pound blocks of glacier ice to the center of Paris) are central to the production of artworks addressing ecology\, global warming\, and climate debt. Offering nuanced reflection on such works\, this talk highlights the importance of a multi-sensorial and multi-species understanding of ecological ethics that takes the question of aesthetic form seriously in the context of art on and in the Anthropocene.
