SUMMARY:EXHIBITION OPENING: A Tragedy of The Commons
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of A Tragedy ofthe Commons. The conceptual catalyst for thiswork is the research of Nobel Laureate ElinorOstrom\, specifically her design principles forthe sustainable management of common-poolresources. In collaboration with Professor StevenHoffman\, who distilled Ostrom’s work into eightpoetic yet provocative points\, and ProfessorSusan Colberg\, who provided typographic \n\n\n\nexpertise\, Caulfield developed a series of large-scale linocut\, inkjet\, and silkscreen prints. These \n\n\n\nare paired with sculptures made from reclaimedwood\, creating a physical dialogue between thepermanence of the printed word and the materialhistory of our environment.The images on display were initially developedfor the artist book Planet for Sale as part ofSpeculative Energy Future’s Flux Kit for EnergyTransition\, which will also be on view for theopening.

They are a speculation about thefuture\, taking notes from the present and the pastas a portal to a better world.

SUMMARY:Speculative Energy Futures: Prototypes for Possible Worlds Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases interdisciplinary collaborative work produced by the participants of the multi-year research-creation project Speculative Energy Futures. Speculative Energy Futures brings together artists\, activists\, designers\, engineers\, scientists\, humanists\, social scientists\, policy makers\, Indigenous legal experts and more\, to inquire into the complex intersections of climate change and energy transition\, as interlocking sites of possibility as we imagine and model a range of potential low-carbon just futures. \n\n\n\nPrototypes for Possible Worlds is a proto exploration of where solarities can be formed: where feminist and socially just and multi-species and Indigenous ways of thinking might come together. It is about the synergies and solidarities that we can nurture as we face the daunting challenges of climate change. \n\n\n\n. . . \n\n\n\nWhile the exhibition will run in the University of Alberta’s FAB Gallery (1-1\, Fine Arts Building) from December 10\, 2019-January 11\, 2020\, the reception launch will take place December 13th from 7:00-10:00 p.m. All are welcome to join us for hors d’oeuvres and a brief introductory program\, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nAbout the Project: \n\n\n\nSpeculative Energy Futures consists of researchers from across Turtle Island; it is coordinated out of the University of Alberta on Treaty Six Territory\, the traditional home of 48 different Indigenous nations (First Nations\, Métis and Inuit). The city of Edmonton\, where the University of Alberta is situated and where our team has gathered to share its prototype exhibition\, is located on lands long ago stolen from Papaschase and Métis peoples who were displaced through means and methods that led to\, and ongoingly enact\, the loss of culture and lives. We acknowledge our nation’s history of genocidal practices and assert that conflict over energy and natural resources have played\, and continues to play\, a starring role in this history. As we think through ecological\, climate and energy justice\, the Speculative Energy Futures team understands that there is no social or ecological justice without decolonization and indigenization. An anti-racist\, anti-sexist\, and anti-speciesist worldview is necessary to combat the extractivist world-view that has contributed to climate change through the exploitation of land and resources\, and that has likewise relied upon the exploitation of gendered\, classed and racialized bodies\, as well as the erasure of knowledge held by those bodies. This is why we argue that feminist and decolonial approaches to energy transition are vital.

DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join MacEwan University’s Office of Sustainability for an Urban Beekeeping Tour! \n\n\n\nDuring this tour\, guests will explore the bee hotel and rooftop beehives that were installed in 2016. Through a general overview\, learn interesting facts about pollinators like honeybees and how you can get involved in food security initiatives at MacEwan and at home. The tour runs for approximately 50 minutes to allow for questions and discussion. \n\n\n\nPlease note:– The tour is accessible for guests of all ages.– Part of the tour will be outdoors (weather permitting)\, please dress appropriately.– We will not be venturing onto the roof\, so there will be little contact with bees themselves. However\, solitary bees and honeybees are very docile and only sting when threatened (threaten we shall not).– There will be honey samples. \n\n\n\nThis project is made possible by Campus Services\, the Office of Sustainability\, and our beekeeper: Troy Donovan. \n\n\n\nCampus Services is committed to re-purposing campus space to grow food locally and naturally and activating solutions for positive environmental\, social and economic impact. If we show council that the public wants climate action then council will move forward with a strong energy transition strategy and we can organize to influence it. Please attend the council meeting. Together we can make Edmonton’s energy transition better for everyone. \n\n\n\nWHERE: River Valley Room. 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square. Edmonton\, Alberta. \n\n\n\nWHEN: The Executive’s Committee’s July 12th agenda will be posted on July 8th. Through a general overview\, learn interesting facts about pollinators like honeybees and how you can get involved in food security initiatives at MacEwan and at home. The tour runs for approximately 50 minutes to allow for questions and discussion. \n\n\n\nPlease note:– The tour is accessible for guests of all ages.– Part of the tour will be outdoors (weather permitting)\, please dress appropriately.– We will not be venturing onto the roof\, so there will be little contact with bees themselves. SUMMARY:Indigenous Rights and a Green New Deal
DESCRIPTION:The Green New Deal is picking up steam\, and organizations like the Leap are making it an election issue this fall. Most Green New Deal proposals state a desire to honour treaties and Indigenous sovereignty. But how do we turn this rhetoric into action? How should Indigenous land and water defenders interact with the Green New Deal? \nBriarpatch Magazine presents a panel discussion about Indigenous rights and the Green New Deal. \nPanellists: \nEmily Riddle is nehiyaw from the Alexander First Nation in Treaty 6 territory\, but currently lives on the territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. She is a researcher\, writer\, and policy analyst\, and sits on the board of advisors for the Yellowhead Institute. \nBrooks Arcand-Paul is a nehiyaw napew (Cree) from kipohtakaw (Alexander First Nation) in Treaty 6 territory\, a treaty which was adhered to by kitâniskocâpân catchistahwayskum (his great-great-grandfather) at Fort Edmonton. Brooks is a litigator whose practice includes Aboriginal\, employment and corporate/commercial law\, with particular expertise in First Nations matters. Brooks is a practicing lawyer and a director of the Indigenous Bar Association\, an association that represents over 300 Indigenous lawyers\, judges\, academics\, and students. \nNigel Henri Robinson is a Dene comedian\, writer\, filmmaker\, land defender\, and community leader from Cold Lake First Nations. He works with Beaver Hills Warriors\, and Acimowin\, an Indigenous music and news show. \nEriel Tchekwie Deranger is the executive director of Indigenous Climate Action. A member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN)\, Deranger has a far reaching reputation for challenging fossil fuel development and championing the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. \nFree event. DESCRIPTION:In response to the lack of media coverage concerning the violent attacks on the protesters in Khartoum\, Sudan\, we ask you to join us for a peaceful protest in solidarity this coming Monday. \nWe stand in solidarity to continue spreading awareness of the genocide and brutality taking place in Sudan. We stand in solidarity to continue pushing the world to not shy away from events that do not directly impact them\, but to challenge their capacity for empathy and care for those suffering. We stand in solidarity to show the people of Sudan that we will not let any of this revolution be lost in vain. \nA brief summary of the events: \nThe dictator who ruled over Sudan for nearly 30 years\, Omar al-Bashir\, was overthrown and deposed by armed forces on April 11\, 2019. Amidst the short-lived cheers of relief\, joy\, and victory\, it was decided that Sudan would have a transitional government for the next 2 years\, led by the Transitional Military Council (TMC) until the election of a new leader. Since then\, there has been a 2-month long massive peaceful sit-in with the demand for a civilian ruled government. \nDuring Eid\, on June 3\, 2019\, a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) disrupted the sit-in happening in Khartoum\, Sudan\, by violently attacking and opening fire on the peaceful demonstrators/observers. Since then\, it is estimated that the death toll is well over 100\, with over 650 injured. \nShortly after the violence started\, the UN pulled their personnel from Sudan\, leaving unarmed and unprotected civilians to fend for themselves. 40 bodies were pulled from the Nile River on Tuesday\, June 4th and taken to an unknown location by the RSF. There are innocent people being thrown in the River Nile\, dead or alive. There are people being shot and r*ped in their homes. Soldiers are displaying the underwear of those they have r*ped to flaunt the number of people they have harmed. \nThey are tapping phones\, cutting off internet access and media outlets\, arresting and/or refusing entrance to organizations trying to provide relief supplies as well as medical aid. Mobile health clinics that were set up to treat injured protestors have been set on fire and destroyed; medical equipment looted\, and health care workers assaulted. \nAs we stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan\, we also acknowledge the war\, genocide\, and oppression faced by the fellow Sudanese people of South Sudan\, Darfur\, and Nuba. We pray for the uplifting of Sudanese people\, and stand in comfort of the support brought from all communities. \nYour voice is invaluable. Please share and repost this event.
